Toni Henderson
Advanced Practitioner
Mental Health Nurse
I am a highly experienced Mental Health Nurse with a strong clinical specialism and genuine passion for ADHD and neurodevelopmental conditions. My practice is centred on supporting individuals with ADHD to better understand their experiences, build practical coping strategies, and improve day-to-day functioning and quality of life. I bring a warm, compassionate, and person-centred approach to my work, and I am committed to delivering care that feels collaborative, respectful, and tailored to each individual.
I have extensive experience in conducting ADHD assessments, underpinned by a strong understanding of diagnostic frameworks, differential diagnosis, and the functional impact of ADHD across the lifespan. I am skilled in carrying out comprehensive clinical interviews, taking detailed developmental histories, and exploring symptom presentation in line with diagnostic criteria. My approach is structured yet relational, ensuring individuals feel listened to, validated, and supported throughout what can often be a significant and emotional process. I am confident in identifying functional impact across areas such as education, employment, relationships, emotional regulation, and daily living, while also carefully considering co-occurring conditions that may shape presentation. I place strong emphasis on thoughtful clinical formulation, shared decision-making, and ensuring assessments are both clinically robust and accessible.
A key strength in my practice is delivering brief, practical interventions that focus on the real-life impact of ADHD and co-occurring mental health difficulties. I support individuals with executive functioning, impulse control, delayed gratification, emotional regulation, anxiety management, organisation, motivation, and managing overwhelm. I take a compassionate and realistic approach, working alongside people to develop strategies that feel achievable and can be meaningfully integrated into daily life. I am particularly skilled in helping individuals turn insight into lasting, practical change.
I provide psychoeducation for ADHD and autism, supporting individuals and families to develop a clearer, more compassionate understanding of neurodevelopmental conditions and how they affect thoughts, emotions, behaviour, and everyday functioning. I aim to make complex information accessible and meaningful, helping people feel more empowered and less alone in their experiences.
My broader clinical experience spans NHS Primary Care Neurodevelopmental Services, psychiatric intensive care, rehabilitation services, crisis services, and community mental health teams. Within primary care neurodevelopmental services, I support individuals with ADHD, autism, and co-occurring mental health needs, focusing on improving access to timely assessment pathways, evidence-based interventions, and ongoing support. I am passionate about reducing barriers to care and helping neurodivergent individuals access the support they need in a timely and equitable way.
I am also committed to trauma-informed care, with a strong awareness of how trauma can shape emotional regulation, behaviour, relationships, and engagement with services. I strive to create safe, supportive, and psychologically informed spaces where people feel respected, understood, and genuinely heard.
Across all areas of my practice, I bring strong clinical judgement, emotional resilience, and a warm, relational approach to building therapeutic connections. I take a holistic, formulation-based view of care, always considering the interaction between neurodevelopmental conditions and co-occurring mental health difficulties such as anxiety, depression, trauma-related experiences, and emotional dysregulation.
